Using Expert Advisors with prop firm challenges: what to check
Many proprietary trading firms run evaluation challenges on MetaTrader 5, and some allow Expert Advisors. Rules vary widely between firms and change over time, so verify everything with the firm itself before you start.
Check the firm's EA policy first
Some firms allow EAs freely, some allow them with conditions, and some ban them. Look for the rules page or ask support in writing, and keep the reply. A product description cannot tell you what a particular firm allows.
Rules that most often matter
- Daily and total drawdown limits, and whether they are measured on balance or equity.
- Restrictions on high-frequency trading, tick scalping, latency arbitrage or very short trade durations.
- Bans or limits on martingale, grid or other position-averaging methods.
- News trading rules around major releases.
- Rules on holding trades over the weekend or overnight.
- Limits on copy trading or running the same strategy across many accounts.
- Minimum trading days and profit-target rules.
Match the EA settings to the firm's limits
Drawdown limits are strict, and an EA that is fine on a normal account can breach a daily limit in one bad session. Lower the risk setting, use the EA's drawdown or daily-loss stop if it has one, and run it on a demo account with the firm's limits in mind.
Platform and symbol details
Prop firms often use their own broker server and symbol names. Confirm the symbol name, trading hours and account type, and check whether an EA that needs a DLL is permitted on the firm's platform.
No guarantee
No EA can promise to pass a challenge. Past test results do not guarantee future results, and challenge fees are at risk.
Frequently asked questions
Are Expert Advisors allowed at every prop firm?
No. Policies differ by firm and by account type. Always check the firm's current rules and keep written confirmation.
Can an EA guarantee passing a challenge?
No. Results depend on market conditions, settings and the firm's rules, and no strategy can guarantee a pass.
Should I test the EA before paying for a challenge?
Yes. Run it on a demo account that mirrors the firm's drawdown limits and trading conditions first.
